Hi guys!! Next up in my DIY Halloween Costume Series is this adoooorable Cat in the Hat Costume!! Of course I couldn't resist making an outfit around my cutie pie Lila puppy! And that's when I came up with the idea of dressing up as the Cat in the Hat with my two little minions Thing 1 and Thing 2!

If you have pets, this would be a great group costume! And if not, just keep it simple with the Cat in the Hat costume.

Cat in the Hat dress:
To put this Cat in the Hat look together, you will need a simple black dress (I bought mine at Forever21 for about $15), red felt, white felt, a black boa, a big safety pin, a black marker, scissors, and acrylic glue (or a hot glue gun).

Start by cutting out of white felt a big oval shape. Then use a pencil to draw a big bow on red felt and cut it out as well. Use the black marker to outline the bow shape and details. Next use glue to add both shapes to the front of the dress. Finish off by using a big safety pin to add the black boa to the back of the dress as the tail.

The Hat:
The Cat in the Hat would be nothing without his hat, am I right?! So I created this mini version of the classic hat using red felt, white felt, black felt, a headband, and a hot glue gun. NO SEWING required!!

To create the cat's hat, just follow these 10 easy steps:
1. Cut out of white felt two circles, one with a diameter of 18cm and one of 11cm. Also cut a rectangle of white felt of about 19cm x 31cm. Then cut out of red felt two stripes of about 4cm x 18cm.
2. Glue the two red stripes onto the white rectangle to resemble the hat stripes.
3. Glue the ends of the rectangle together to create a cylinder shape.
4. Use the scissors to cut short little lines along the circle of one end of the cylinder (see photo as reference).
5. These lines will help you fold the top edge of the cylinder inward as the above photo.
6. Add glue to the folded in edge and then add the smaller white felt circle to seal the top of the hat. Cut off any excess felt you may see around the edges and secure it all with glue.
7. Next cut two small incisions into the middle of the big white felt circle and use it to thread it to the headband (the photo above will explain!). I placed my circle slightly to one side the headband and secured it with lots of glue.
8. Now glue the cylinder we worked on earlier to the headband with the white circle. Use lots of glue to secure well.
9. Cut out of black and white felt the shape of a small cat ear and glue them together.
10. Use glue to add the ear to the top of the headband right next to the hat. To keep the ear standing, place one big drop of transparent glue to the white center of the ear and fold the ear forwards to secure. Once it dries, it will remain perky and stood up.

All done!

Y listo!

Makeup:
I kept the makeup simple with a classic cat eye and whiskers combo. I used a black liquid eyeliner to draw everything on my face and added bright red lipstick to match the dress's bow.

Maquillaje:

The Basket:
To pick up all that Halloween candy, be sure to also make this suuuuper simple fish basket! I basically printed out the fish as well as lots of turquoise polka dots and glued them to a white basket. I also added a turquoise boa along the handle of the basket to tie in the classic colors of Cat in the Hat.

Thing 1 and Thing 2:
The best part of this costume?!?! Things 1 and 2 of course!! If you have pets (or toddlers!), why not add more fun to the bunch! I wanted their costumes to be very practical because I knew there was NO way anything I placed on their head would stay put.

Basically I cut out two big white felt circles, drew Thing 1 and Thing 2 on them using a black marker, and glued them to the back of red dog shirts. I made the circles just big enough to cover the designs the shirts already had. Then cut a small piece of turquoise boa and tie/glue it to the top of a dog collar. Aaaaannd all done!

Cosa 1 y Cosa 2:
La mejor parte de este disfraz??! Cosa 1 y Cosa 2!!!

Yyyyyyy listo!!
